Mexico
In the year 2050 the population of Mexico has topped 150 million.
Overpopulation and porverty, droughts and epidemics are the worst
threats to the inhabitants. The formerely so unique nature of Mexico
is for the most part destroyed, and the Mayan and Aztec temples and
monuments that three decades ago were big tourist attractions are now
only piles of rubble. Unemployment in the cities is a horrible problem
and in the countryside the lengthening dry seasons tax the population.
The former main sources of income, oil- and gas-production are now, that
the resources have become depleted, in crisis. New sources to replace
the income thus lost have not been found yet, and so the economy of
Mexico is in a very bad shape. The national debt has risen to unforeseen
heights and the agriculture is not big enough to feed the growing population.
The seat of power in Mexico is held by the son of General Huertta,
Ramirez Huertta. His repairing measures to the problems of the country
are insufficient. The populations simmers in its anger and resentment
against the prevailing government and a full scale revolt is expected.
In fact a potential leader for the revolt already exists, and Huertta's
assassins are already after one Frida Siqueiros, an independent and
fearless woman, who has taken a public stand against the rule of Huertta.
The populace loves Fida, but nobody knows if she can survive long enough
to gather the people under her flag. Fortunately for Frieda, she has
numerous supporters who have promised to protect her with their lives.
These include women who have laid their lives on the line and act
as confusers and doubles at public events.
The cultural life of Mexico has become badly degraded. However, on the
Yucatan peninsula there lives a small colony of artists, many of them
followers of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. This group, which is called
Las Uvas, includes painters, poets as well as some developers of totally
new forms of art, like cyber-knotwork and network-art.
In the year 2007 troops lead by general Huertta attacked Texas, their
aim being to take over the area from USA. This war had horrible consequenses
for the nature of the area as both sides used chemical as well as biological
weapons. The flora and fauna of the area has been destroyed and those people
who did not die as a result have moved elswhere. The war lasted until
2009, when Mexico finally conquered Texas by a surprise attack. The
moment was carefully chosen, and actually a deciding role was held by
a Mexican spy, John Smith, who held a high office in the US government.
He fed false information to the government that led it to believe that
no attack was expected for at least 24 hours. Mexico, however, attacked
earlier and met a resistance that was not as prepared as it should have
been. The agent John Smith was immediately executed at the USA side, but
a rumor still goes around Mexico, that he managed to escape at the last
moment and another man was shot in his place.
After media sent the "interrogation" of general Huerttas prisoners of war
in a live broadcast, the populace of USA pressured the government so
much that it was forced to retaliate by dropping an atomic bomb to Mexico.
Four a-bombs were dropped on Mexico City. Almost 23 million people died
and the city was totally destroyed leaving only an enormous crater. The
nearby Texcoco-lake boiled dry. Mexico returned Texas to USA, but the
US military command would regret the decision to bomb Mexico. The fallout
was expected to spread only over Mexican area, but because of some small
alterations that a hacker had made, there was a mistake in the calculations.
Unexpected changes weather patterns spread the fallout far into the Texas
area causing widespred rioting and panic. In the town of El Paso, at the
border of Texas and New Mexico, there started a riot which caused 3000
deaths and the whole city burned down. This riot was started by a couple
of extremist movements, who saw the fallout as intentionally planned and
wanted to take revenge on all higher civil servants in the city.
They started the arsons from the city hall, but they soon spread, and
as the water resources of the city were scarce nothing could be done.
In the year 2025 the brother of general Huertta, Ricardo, took the seat
of power in the country after his brother. This self acclaimed admirerer
of Spain could not care less about the traditions of Mexican indians.
He used the old temples as building material for new highways and started
a forceful campaign to blend the indians into the rest of the population.
This caused strong resistance in the populace, but Ricardo Huertta quickly
finished the complaints by executions and other punishments. This oppression
stopped finally in the year 2037, when a 15-year old indian, Gomez RIvera,
succeeded in placing an explosive device under Huerttas chair. It blew
in the middle of a live TV-broadcast from Huerttas home palace, where
he intended to make public his new restrictions to the indians. The
much feared tyrant died immediately. This succesfull assassination had
the result of making Ricardos successor, his nephew Ramirez, to keep
a lower profile and stopping the restrictions against indigenous populace
to calm down the people. These days it has been found out that his power
is weak, and the people wait for a suitable opportunity to get their
own representative to the seat of power.
